scaffolds in regenerative endodontics: a review
Authors
abstract
root canal therapy has enabled us to save numerous teeth over the years. the most desired outcome of endodontic treatment would be when diseased or nonvital pulp is replaced with healthy pulp tissue that would revitalize the teeth through regenerative endodontics. ‘a search was conducted using the pubmed and medline databases for articles with the criteria ‘platelet rich plasma’, ‘platelet rich fibrin’, ‘stem cells’, ‘natural and artificial scaffolds’ from 1982-2015’. tissues are organized as three‑dimensional structures, and appropriate scaffolding is necessary to provide a spatially correct position of cell location and regulate differentiation, proliferation, or metabolism of the stem cells. extracellular matrix molecules control the differentiation of stem cells, and an appropriate scaffold might selectively bind and localize cells, contain growth factors, and undergo biodegradation over time. different scaffolds facilitate the regeneration of different tissues. to ensure a successful regenerative procedure, it is essential to have a thorough and precise knowledge about the suitable scaffold for the required tissue. this article gives a review on the different scaffolds providing an insight into the new developmental approaches on the horizon. key words: extracellular matrix, pulp regeneration, scaffolds

full textAlkaline Materials and Regenerative Endodontics: A Review
Periapical health is the primary goal of endodontic treatment in mature and immature teeth. In addition, the goals of treatment of immature teeth with arrested root development include root growth to length and maturation of the apex, as well as thickening of the canal wall. These goals are valid for immature teeth that have been subjected to trauma and dental caries or that are the result of d...
full textStem Cells in Regenerative Endodontics
Background Currently, clinical endodontics includes procedures that are based on the ability of stem cells to accomplish repair (eg, direct pulp capping, apexogenesis, apexification, and even pulpal regeneration). An attempt is made to critically assess the current status in pulp regeneration therapy. Methods: Systematically, 2 distinctly different strategies exist involving stem cells for t...
full textRegenerative Endodontics: An Evidence Based Review
Endodontic treatment of a tooth in its present state offers a high degree of success for most cases, but it leaves the tooth in a physiologically “dead” state. Regenerative endodontics is an emerging field which is trying to regenerate natural tissues associated with the tooth generated by nature. This article reviews the present status of regenerative endodontics, why is it important to regene...
full textA review of regenerative endodontics: current protocols and future directions
This review outlines the biological basis and clinical protocols currently used in regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) and discuss future directions in pulp regeneration approaches. The treatment of immature teeth with REPs has been described as a 'paradigm shift' as there is the potential for further root maturation. Clinically, REPs involve disinfection of the root canal system without ...
full textChallenges in regenerative endodontics: a case series.
INTRODUCTION An immature tooth with pulpal necrosis and apical periodontitis presents a unique challenge to the endodontist. Endodontic treatment options consist of apexification, apical barriers, or more recently, revascularization. The purpose of this case series is to report three cases that used revascularization protocol as described by Banchs and Trope. Each case presented its own special...
